MOSFET, IGBT or Gate Driver? Sort Power-Semiconductor Stock Clearly

Power switches control the main power path; gate-driver ICs translate control commands into suitable gate drive. MOSFETs, IGBTs, drivers and power modules should not be merged into a single inventory item.

Separate the switch from its driver

A MOSFET or IGBT can perform the switching function in a power-conversion circuit. A controller’s logic command usually passes through a drive stage that provides suitable gate voltage, current and timing. Infineon describes the gate-driver IC as the interface between a low-power controller and a power-semiconductor switch.

Why the driver is a separate component

A driver charges and discharges the gate. Knowing that a device “drives MOSFETs” is not enough to select a replacement: high-side or low-side arrangement, isolation, supply requirements and protection functions differ. An isolated driver transfers a control signal across an electrical isolation barrier, so a similar-looking package does not establish equivalence to a non-isolated driver.

MOSFET and IGBT are different device types

Both can serve as power switches, but their structures and electrical behavior differ. Suitability depends on operating voltage, current, switching conditions, losses and thermal design. Avoid blanket claims that one type is always better or that equal voltage ratings establish interchangeability. Consult the individual data sheets for the actual operating conditions.

Use four clear stock groups

  • Power MOSFETs: retain full ordering code, package, quantity and lot.
  • IGBTs: distinguish discrete devices from modules and retain the complete model.
  • Gate-driver ICs: list separately from power switches, with known pack and condition details.
  • Power modules: retain nameplate and terminal photos and disclose installation or removal history.

Replace vague lot descriptions with evidence

Original packaging, labels, known provenance and use history help define an assessment. Electrical specifications cannot be inferred from appearance, and photos are not electrical tests. Disclose rework, board removal and unknown origin rather than describing such material as new original stock. This guide explains classification; it is not a circuit-design or substitution recommendation.
