An amplifier conditions an analog signal, an ADC converts an analog input into a digital representation, and a DAC produces an analog output from digital codes. List these categories separately when preparing ADI or TI surplus.
From a physical measurement to digital data
Temperature, pressure or current measurements often produce an analog voltage or current. An amplifier can condition that signal before an ADC samples and converts it. Signal chains vary: filtering, the reference and input-drive requirements must be considered for the particular converter.
Three functions to keep separate
- Operational amplifier: works with surrounding circuitry for functions such as amplification, buffering or filtering; it is not itself a digital converter.
- ADC: converts an analog input into digital data. ADI identifies the AD7685 as a SAR ADC.
- DAC: converts digital codes to an analog output. ADI identifies the AD5686R as a multichannel voltage-output DAC.
Why “16-bit” is not a substitution rule
Resolution is only one specification. For an ADC, check input arrangement, sample rate, reference requirements and digital interface. For a DAC, check output type, channel count and reference configuration. Two 16-bit products can differ in pinout, supply requirements and performance conditions. A shared resolution does not establish interchangeability.
Make the stock list useful
Record the manufacturer and complete ordering code first. Keep amplifiers, ADCs, DACs, references and interface devices in separate rows. If a suffix is missing, do not copy package or grade information from a similar product page. Retain label photos, quantity, lot and package information, and mark unknown conditions for confirmation.
Illustrative example: surplus from a data-acquisition board
A remaining lot may include an amplifier, converter and isolated interface. Grouping by function helps explain the material, but each row still needs an individual part and condition check. This example is not a customer case. The named devices illustrate functions and do not indicate current stock or guaranteed buyback.
